Television cameras and photographers from around the world were on hand to capture the moment when Marjorie Enya, a manager at Rio’s Deodoro Stadium, the venue for the rugby competition, took hold of the microphone in order to pop the question to Cerullo on the pitch.

A tearful Cerullo accepted her proposal and, having no ring, 28-year-old Enya decided to improvise by tying a ribbon to her finger.

Cerullo, 25, was a member of the Brazilian squad that narrowly missed out on reaching the knockout rounds of the competition, which was eventually won by Australia.

“The Olympic Games can look like closure for me but it’s starting a new life with someone,” explained Enya. “As soon as I knew [Isadora] was in the squad I thought: ‘I have to make this special’,” she added.

“I know rugby people are amazing and I knew that they would embrace it. She is the love of my life. I wanted to show people that love wins.”

Cerullo may not have finished the tournament with a medal, but she exits the Games with a very special prize indeed!
