Tokyo 2020 Olympic torch

The torch that will be used for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch Relay has been designed with a cherry blossom motif — a flower close to the hearts of all Japanese people. The relay itself will begin on March 2021, to coincide with the cherry blossom season in Japan. The concept of the relay is 'Hope Lights Our Way' and the torch will tour the entire length and breadth of Japan.

A blend of traditional and contemporary technologies

The shape of Japan — a cherry blossom motif.
The Olympic torch has been created in a traditional form, taking advantage of the same aluminium extrusion manufacturing technology used in the production of the Shinkansen Bullet Train.
Completely seamless – produced from a single sheet of metal.
A form that symbolises the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch Relay, inspired by Japanese tradition and created using advanced technological capabilities.

Introduction to the torch used for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch Relay

Turning our thoughts to reconstruction and sustainability

Part of the material the Olympic torch is made from is recycled aluminium*, which was originally used in the construction of prefabricated housing units in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake.
The temporary units that housed those affected by the disaster have been transformed into the Olympic torch, as a symbol of peace and to highlight the steps taken towards the reconstruction of disaster-affected areas.

*Approx. 30% of the Olympic torch is made from recycled aluminium.

A beautiful, continuously-burning flame

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic torch has been designed in the form of the Olympic flame. Five separate flames emerge from flower petals and come together as one at the centre of the torch to give off a more brilliant light — the 'Path of Hope'.

To ensure the torch stays alight, the combustible section that lights the torch features two combustion mechanisms: a high calorific blue flame and a flameless mechanism (catalytic reaction), which supports the red flame of the torch.
The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch Relay will be held over 121 days — an unusually long period.

The flame will burn brightly and forcefully as it passes through the wide variety of seasons, climatic conditions and geographical regions that make up the Japanese archipelago.

A torch for everyone

The weight and grip of the Olympic torch have been manufactured in a way that makes it easy for absolutely anyone to hold.

Torch Selection Committee

The Olympic torch was selected as ‘most epitomising the Tokyo 2020 Games’ by a panel of experts from a wide range of fields including design and technology.
