India’s first super heavyweight boxer at the Olympics, Satish Kumar will be up against world champion Bakhodir Jalolov of Uzbekistan in the men’s +91kg quarter-final bout on Sunday.
World No. 9 Satish Kumar defeated Jamaica’s Ricardo Brown by a 4:1 split decision in the round of 16 clash at the Ryogoku Kokugikan arena.
Meanwhile, top-seeded Bakhodir Jalolov outpunched Mahammad Abdullayev (Azerbaijan) 5:0 in his previous match.
Both boxers received a bye in the first round.
Satish Kumar, 32, will be the underdog against the 27-year-old Bakhodir Jalolov, who has been at the top of the super heavyweight division for half a decade.
The Uzbekistan boxer is a three-time Asian champion, two-time world medallist and an overwhelming favourite at Tokyo 2020. He finished fifth at Rio 2016.
Satish has two bronze medals at the Asian Championships to his name along with a silver at this year’s Boxam tournament in Spain.
With Manish Kaushik, Vikas Krishan, Ashish Kumar and Amit Panghal knocked out in their respective opening rounds, Satish Kumar now remains India’s only male boxer in the fray at Tokyo.
The other six boxers in the +91kg quarter-finals are world No. 3 Mourad Aliev (France), Frazer Clarke (Great Britain), Dainier Pero (Cuba), Richard Torrez Jr (USA), Ivan Veriasov (ROC) and Kunkabayev Kamshybek (Kazakhstan).
The Satish Kumar vs Bakhodir Jalolov Olympic boxing match will start at 9:36 AM IST on Sunday, August 1.
