It was a thrilling first day of boxing at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Under the lights of the NEC's Hall 4, Team England's boxers got the home crowd rocking.

Middleweight Lewis Richardson won his opening bout 5-0 on points over Welshman Haaris Khan while in the light welterweight division his compatriot Joseph Tyers saw off Sri Lanka's Sanjeewa Bandara Rajakaruna Rajakar.

England's women middleweight boxer Kerry Richardson was also victorious 4-0 on points over her Ghanaian opponent Ornella Sathoud.

2018 Commonwealth men's light welterweight champion Jonas Jonas of Namibia got his title defence off to a strong start overpowering Colan Caleb of Nauru, forcing the referee to stop the contest.

The two big knockouts of the day went to Australia's Billy Polkinghorn in the men's light welter class who sent Fabio Taryll Liam Roselie of the Seychelles to the floor, and Welsh light heavyweight Taylor Bevan who triumphed over Onyx Lye of New Zealand.
