India’s Yuki Bhambri and French partner Albano Olivetti won the doubles title at the BMW Open 2024 tennis tournament in Munich, Germany on Sunday.
Also known as the Bavarian International Tennis Championships, the clay court tournament was an ATP 250 event.
The win was the Indian tennis player’s second title on the ATP Tour. Bhambri, currently ranked 59th, won the doubles title last year at the Mallorca Open, which was also an ATP 250 event, albeit on grass.
In Munich, the unseeded Bhambri-Olivetti won the final against German wildcards Andreas Mies and Jan-Lennard Struff 7-6(6), 7-6(5) in an hour and 51 minutes. It was the Indo-French duo’s first title as a pair.
The victory is expected to lift the 31-year-old to a career-best world No. 56 in the men’s doubles tennis rankings.
Earlier in the semi-finals, Bhambri-Olivetti defeated Austria’s Alexander Erler and Lucas Miedler 6-1, 6-7(5), 10-7 and in the quarters, they beat American duo Robert Galloway and Evan King 6-3, 6-3.
In the opening round, Bhambri-Olivetti stunned Belgium’s third-seeded pair of Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen 4-6, 7-6(5),10-6 in 95 minutes. Gille-Joran, who made it to the finals of the French Open last year, won the Monte-Carlo Masters title last week.
The win on Sunday also made Yuki Bhambri the first Indian tennis player to win the Bavarian International Tennis Championships, a tournament held since 1899.
