Malaysia look well-placed to reach the men's quarter-finals at the Badminton Asia Team Championships 2024 on home soil in Shah Alam after the draw was conducted on Tuesday (30 January).
Lee Zii Jia will hope to continue improving his form this season when he leads the Malaysia team in group B alongside Chinese Taipei, Kazakhstan, and Brunei.
Chinese Taipei will provide the stiffest test, but with two teams per group advancing in the tournament (13-18 February), the defending champions should make it into the last eight.
Lee will be joined by Ng Tze Yong, Leong Jun Hao and Eogene Ewe in the singles, while Aaron Chia, Soh Wooi Yik, Goh Sze Fei, Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, Choong Hon Jian and Mohd Haikal Nazr are in Malaysia’s doubles team.
So far this season, Malaysian number one Lee lost in the first round of the Malaysian Open before reaching the quarter-finals of the India Open and Indonesia Masters.
Meanwhile, Singapore have a tricky group which also includes powerhouse Japan and Southeast Asian rivals Thailand. Loh Kean Yew, the 2021 world champion, is set to spearhead the Singaporean charge.
Indonesia, meanwhile, are the top seeds in Group D.
In the women's draw, Singapore have another tough group, being paired with Japan and Chinese Taipei. Malaysia and Thailand find themselves in the same group against the UAE and should make it into the quarter-finals. The surprise is the absence of the Republic of Korea team, as world number one An Se-young is currently carrying an injury.
