BUDAPEST - Comments from B-Girl Ami of Japan after beating compatriot B-Girl Ayumi 2-1 to win the OQS Budapest Breaking competition on Sunday. She finished with a joint-top score of 95 in the overall standings alongside B-Girl Ayumi and qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
B-Girl Ami - Japan - qualified
On being emotional when she came off the stage after beating teammate B-Girl Riko in the semifinals:
“I was happy, of course. But on the other hand, Riko also worked so hard. We’re Japanese, that’s why only two can go. But if Riko isn’t Japanese, she would also go to the Olympics. I was happy, but also a little bit upset about the system. That’s why I was confused.”
On whether it was difficult to collect her emotions for the final:
“I just tried to focus on the final. Usually, if I get to the final, I just enjoy the final. But today, my motivation was to win. I just tried to push myself. At Shanghai, I wanted to be top four, then maybe I have good motivation for Budapest. But this time, I was like, OK, this is the last qualification, so I just want to win. That was the difference.”
On competing at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games:
“I just try to represent myself, do what I want to do, use the stage, that’s my goal.”
On what message Japan breaking is sending to the world after two straight podium sweeps:
“Japan breaking scene is pretty high. Also, we also have different styles. That’s the beauty of breaking. We don’t have rules. Everyone has different tastes, that’s the good part. Every B-Boy or B-Girl can do whatever they want. Just work hard.”
