Canada's B-Boy Phil Wizard and the People's Republic of China's B-Girl 671 won the B-Boy and B-Girl gold medals, respectively, Thursday (18 May) at the WDSF Breaking for Gold (BfG) World Series in Montpellier. The Olympic qualifying competition was a crucial stop for the sport set to make its Olympic debut at Paris 2024.
Phil Wizard won the gold medal final 3-0 over Japan's B-Boy Shigekix. For Shigekix, it is a third-straight medal in the BfG World Series. He finished third in the previous two events.
American B-Boy Gravity claimed the bronze medal, defeating Team GB's B-Boy Sunni in the bronze medal final 2-1.
671 claimed the B-Girl gold medal in the final over Lithuania's B-Girl Nicka in dominating fashion, 3-0. Nicka, 15, is the recently crowned European champion.
The bronze medal went to Japan's B-Girl Ami, a favourite coming into the event, having won the BfG World Series stop in Kitakyushu and finishing second to 671 at the event in Rio. She won the bronze medal match 3-0.
Montpellier, in the south of France, played host for the third Breaking for Gold event of the year. The event was another important stop for the B-Boys and B-Girls, as they earned ranking points towards Olympic qualification.
The breaking competition was part of the FISE (International Festival of Freestyle Sports) event, a week-long festival packed with urban sports (BMX, skateboarding, parkour and more).
Breaking for Gold World Series - Road to Paris 2024
The Breaking for Gold World Series is a crucial stepping-stone for aspiring Olympians as the sport makes its Games debut in the summer next year.
Points from the series count towards the Breaking for Gold rankings, of which the top 14 in each gender advance to next year's Olympic Qualifier Series.
Seven can qualify for Paris via the OQS where two universality places and one host country allocation will also be issued.
A total of 32 breakers (16 B-Boys and 16 B-Girls) will battle for glory on 9 and 10 of August 2024 on the iconic Place de la Concorde as the first Olympic medals in the dance sport are up for grabs.
