The last day of the Australian Olympic trials will have an added dose of star quality after Aussie musician Cody Simpson qualified for the finals of the 100m butterfly. The Gold Coast-born swimmer finished third in his heat in a time of 52.84 seconds, just over a second slower than the fastest qualifier Matt Temple who came home in 51.79s.
If he is to reach the Tokyo 2020 Games, Simpson will need to shave 1.14s off his heats time to hit the Olympic qualifying standard of 51.70s.
The artist-turned-swimmer first rose to fame as a teenager when he released his first single "iYiYi" in 2010, reaching number 19 on the Australian Singles Top 50. He went on to have a successful career as a musician, model and actor, including starring in the lead role of Dmitry in the Broadway musical Anastasia between 2018 and 2019.
Some doubted Simpson's ability to succeed at the trials after the Queenslander returned to the sport only last year after a 10-year absence from the sport. However, the 24-year-old will now have a chance to call himself an Olympian should he succeed in the Australian swimming finals that take place later today.
