After two weeks of intense action, the 2021 tennis season’s first Grand Slam – the Australian Open – will come to a close this weekend.

Three-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka of Japan will be up against surprise finalist, American Jennifer Brady in the women’s singles final on Saturday, February 20.

Third-seeded Osaka, the 2019 Australian Open champion, is the clear favourite, having been in scintillating form in Melbourne. She has dropped just one set all tournament – against Spaniard Garbine Muguruza in the fourth round – and also knocked out the legendary Serena Williams in straight sets in the semi-final.

Brady, the 22nd seed, enjoyed a breakthrough year in 2020 – winning her first WTA title at Kentucky before making the semi-finals at her home Grand Slam, the US Open, where incidentally she fell to eventual champion Naomi Osaka.

Jennifer Brady comes into the final after consecutive three-set matches against Jessica Pegula and Karolina Muchova in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, respectively, and will have her task cut out against Osaka.

In the men’s singles final, world No. 1 Serbian Novak Djokovic will play Russia’s Daniil Medvedev, as he guns for his ninth Australian Open title and third-consecutive one.

Djokovic, who has won the most Australian Open men’s singles titles, has not looked his usual dominant self. He dropped at least one set from the second round till the quarter-finals, before recording a straight-sets win over Russian qualifier Aslan Karatsev in the semis.

Fourth-seeded Medvedev meanwhile has played just one five-setter all tournament and overcame the challenge of Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semi-finals to make his second Grand Slam final after the 2019 US Open.
