Incidentally, it was at the Australian Open tennis in 2005 that Sania Mirza made her Grand Slam debut. She also won her career’s first Grand Slam at the same venue alongside Mahesh Bhupathi at the 2009 Australian Open in mixed doubles.
Sania Mirza went on to win six Grand Slam titles in her career. She won the Australian Open women’s doubles title with Martina Hingis in 2016 and will team up with Kazakhstan’s Anna Danilina in the category this year.
Heading into the Australian Open 2023, Sania Mirza is 29th in the WTA rankings for women’s doubles while her partner Anna Danilina is world No. 14. The duo, seeded eighth, will open its campaign against the unseeded Hungarian-American duo of Dalma Galfi and Bernarda Pera on Wednesday.
Apart from Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna, Ramkumar Ramanathan, former junior Australian Open champion Yuki Bhambri and Saketh Myneni are the other three Indian players who will feature in the doubles events at Australian Open 2023.
Rohan Bopanna will team up with Australia’s Matthew Ebden in men’s doubles. The duo is seeded tenth and will take on Austria’s Lucas Miedler and Alexander Erler, who are unseeded.
Ramkumar Ramanathan has partnered with Mexico’s Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela while the All-Indian pair of Yuki Bhambri and Saketh Myneni was handed a wildcard entry.
Meanwhile, Serbia’s Novak Djokovic and Spain’s Rafael Nadal are set to resume their rivalry in the men's singles event. The two tennis greats are placed in the opposite halves of the draw and could meet in the final at Melbourne Park if they go all the way.
Rafael Nadal has 22 Grand Slam singles titles to his name but Novak Djokovic is just one shy of equalling Nadal’s tally and also enters the tournament on better form.
Novak Djokovic will also be looking for his 10th Australian Open title. He missed the 2022 edition due to his vaccination status. Andy Murray, Daniil Medvedev and Nick Kyrgios will be the other players in the hunt for the title.
In women’s singles, world No. 1 Iga Swiatek and Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur, who reached both the Wimbledon and U.S. Open finals in 2022, and world No. 3 Jessica Pegula, will be the top contenders.
