Atanu Das: Top 5 performances by the ace Indian archer
Atanu Das will lead India's charge at the men's recurve team and individual events at Tokyo 2020.
Atanu Das will represent India at the men's recurve team and individual events at Tokyo 2020, slated to get underway from July 23, 2021.
Das will team up with Pravin Jadhav and Tarundeep Rai in the team event. They qualified for Tokyo after bagging a silver medal at the 2019 Archery World Championships in the Netherlands.
Das will be a key figure in the Indian archery contingent at the Olympics and ahead of the marquee event, let us have a look at some of his best performances over the years.
2014 World Cup
It was the year 2014 which brought Das to the fore and cemented his place in the men's team. Das, a part of the India recurve 'B' team along with Thupuvoyi Sworo and Sanjay Boro, displayed a spirited performance but lost to South Korea to settle for silver medal at Medellin, Columbia.
The Indian trio were on the backfoot from the onset as they trailed 0-4. Das and his teammates, however, then showed resilience to make a brilliant comeback and take the tie into shoot-off.
The Koreans then shot a perfect-30 and India fell short with 28 to miss out on the top podium finish.
2019 World Championship
The Tokyo-bound trio of Das, Jadhav and Rai had put on a commendable performance but missed out on the gold medal by a whisker at the 2019 World Archery Championship.
Indian managed to take a slender 27-26 margin but the Chinese trio ofDing Yiliang, Wei Shaoxuan and Feng Hao made a solid comeback to seal the gold medal with a 6-2 win.
It was, however, the first and only medal for the Indian men's recurve team at the World Championships.
2019 Asian Archery Championship
Atanu Das clinched his first podium finish at the Asian Archery Championship with a bronze medal in 2019. He was competing as a neutral athlete at the competition under the World Archery flag.
The then 27-year-old beat Jin Hayek Oh of Korea 6-5 in the shoot-off to clinch the bronze medal. Interestingly, Oh had outclassed his Indian compatriot Jayant Talukdar 4-6, in the final eight round.
Das had lost the silver medal match against then Olympic champion Woojin Kim 7-1.
2021 World Cup (individual)
Atanu Das peaked in the Olympic year as he bagged his first individual World Cup gold earlier this year in Guatemala City. It was also a significant feat for the country as it was India's first individual men’s recurve gold in the World Cup since Jayanta Talukdar won in 2009.
The 29-year-old edged past World Cup debutant Daniel Castro of Spain 6-4 to clinch gold. The Indian archer started on a positive note as he won the first set but later conceded two consecutive sets. He, however, made a brilliant comeback with a 10, nine and nine to claim the fourth set and then finished with a perfect 30 to take home the gold.
2021 World Cup (mixed team)
Atanu Das also bagged a bronze medal with his partner Ankita Bhakat in the mixed team event after upsetting top-seeded United States of America (USA) 6-2 in the third place match at the World Cup in Guatemala City.
India trailed 0-2 at the onset of the match. But Das and Bhakat complemented each other in the second and third set to set things straight. Bhakat shot two 10s from her three shots in the second set while Das took the matter in his own hands and shot a 10 twice in the third set to upstage their higher-seeded opponents.
The pair of Das and Bhakat had narrowly missed out on the silver medal as they lost the shoot-off against Mexico.
