The Asian Wrestling Championships 2023 will be held in Astana, Kazakhstan, from April 9 to 14.
Besides being the yearly continental championship, this year’s Asian showpiece will be significant in terms of qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Though the Astana meet isn’t a direct Paris 2024 qualifier, the number of wrestlers each country fields at the event will determine how many wrestlers they can send to the World Wrestling Championships 2023, scheduled in Belgrade this September. The world championships, in turn, will be the first qualifying event for wrestling at Paris 2024.
India, along with Asian powerhouses Japan, China and hosts Kazakhstan, have named a full quota of 30 wrestlers - 10 each for women’s, men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman categories.
This means that these countries will be allowed 30 wrestlers at the World Championships as well, maximising their chances of winning Paris 2024 berths.
Other Asian powerhouses like Iran and Kyrgyzstan have also named a sizable squad. China’s return to the Asian Championships after four years and expected to pose a stiff challenge to Indian wrestlers at Astana.
While Tokyo Olympics silver medallist and reigning three-time Asian champion Ravi Kumar Dahiya will miss the Astana event with an injury, top names like Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik have opted to sit out the event.
Despite the big names missing the Asian championship, India have plenty of firepower in the squad to impress at the 36th edition of the continental tournament. World championships medallists Deepak Punia, Anshu Malik, Sarita Mor, Under-20 world champion Antim Panghal and U23 world champion Aman Sehrawat are all in the Astana-bound Indian wrestling team.
The Indian contingent for the Asian Wrestling Championships 2023 was picked through selection trials held in New Delhi last month.
The men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman competitions of the Asian Wrestling Championships 2023 were earlier set to be held in New Delhi in India but both were shifted to Astana.
