A new-look Indian rowing team, coached by Ismail Baig, will be out to prove itself at the Asia and Oceania Continental Olympic Qualification Regatta, which will be held in Tokyo from May 5 to 7.

With 16 Asian Olympic berths (five each in men’s and women’s single sculls and three each in men’s and women’s double sculls) on offer, the event presents the Indian rowers a golden opportunity to ensure they return to Tokyo for the Olympics in July-August.

This will be their penultimate chance to qualify for the upcoming Summer Games before the Final Qualification Regatta in Lucerne, Switzerland, to be held from May 16 to18.

Rio 2016 Olympian Dattu Bhokanal and London 2012 participant Sawarn Singh are two known faces missing from the Indian contingent for the Asian qualifiers.

While Bhokanal has been left out for disciplinary issues, Sawarn Singh was dropped because of his below-par performances at India’s training camp at Army Rowing Node (ARN) in Pune.

Much will depend on the Pune training stint considering Indian rowers have been away from competitive action since the 2019 Asian championship in Chungju, South Korea, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
