Asian Games shot put champion Tajinderpal Singh Toor along with the in-form hurdler Jyothi Yarraji will lead India’s challenge at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2023 in Astana, Kazakhstan which begins on Friday.

The Asian Indoor Athletics Championships, running since 2004, is a biennial competition organised by the Asian Athletics Association. Due to COVID-19, the event was cancelled in 2020 and last year’s event was deferred.

India have sent a 25-member contingent - 13 male and 12 female - for this year’s Asian Indoor Athletics Championships, which will be the 10th edition. Watch live streaming in India.

Tajinderpal Singh Toor, a Tokyo Olympian, will be competing in the 2023 season for the first time. He pulled out of the Commonwealth Games and World Athletics Championships last year due to a groin injury but made a winning comeback at India’s National Open Athletics Championship 2022 in October with an impressive 20.68m throw.

Tajinderpal Singh Toor won a silver medal at the previous edition of the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships held in Tehran in 2018. The national record holder will be looking for India’s first gold medal at the competition since Olympian Mayookha Johny won it in the women’s long jump in 2016.

Jyothi Yarraji, who will compete in the women’s 60m sprint and 60m hurdles, will enter the Astana meet in top form. She clocked 8.17 seconds to finish second during an indoor athletics meet in France earlier this month and has already broken India’s national record in the women’s 60m hurdles thrice this year.

Amlan Borgohain, India’s national record-holder in men’s 100m and 200m races, will compete in the men's 60m sprint.

In long jump events, World U20 Championships silver medallist Shaili Singh will be in action. Jeswin Aldrin and Muhammed Anees Yahiya will be India’s best medal prospects in the men's long jump.

Swapna Barman, a gold medallist in heptathlon at Asian Games 2018 in Jakarta, will compete in women’s pentathlon.

At the previous edition held in Tehran in 2018, India bagged four silver medals and two bronze. The Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2023 will conclude on February 12.
