An eight-member Indian contingent participated in wushu at the Asian Games 2023 held in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China, from September 23 to October 8.

Naorem Roshibina Devi was India's only medal winner in the sport with a silver in the women's 60kg sanda event. She won bronze in the same event at Jakarta 2018.

It was India's 10th wushu medal at the Asian Games. Before Hangzhou 2023, India had won one silver and eight bronze in wushu at the continental multisport event. Sandhyarani Devi’s silver in women’s 60kg at Guangzhou 2010 was India’s best result in wushu at the Asian Games before Naorem Roshibina Devi matched it in Hangzhou.

Wushu at the Asian Games 2023 took place in Xiaoshan Guali Sports Centre in Hangzhou from September 24 to September 28.

India had initially named an 11-member wushu squad for Hangzhou 2023 but the team was cut down to eight after Nyeman Wangsu (women’s changquan), Mepung Lamgu (women’s taijiquan and taijijan) and Onilu Tega (women’s 52kg) faced visa issues.

Wushu is a Chinese term, which translates to martial (wu) arts (shu). Wushu athletes competed for medals in two disciplines - sanda and taolu - at the Asian Games.

Sanda is a full-contact combat sport similar to kickboxing while taolu is a combination of gymnastics and martial arts where points are awarded for choreography and execution of routines. A total of 15 medals were on offer across two disciplines.

India sent five athletes for sanda and three for taolu events.

Two-time world championships bronze medallist Surya Bhanu Partap Singh, competing in the men’s 60kg sanda, bowed out in the quarter-finals while Vikrant Baliyan, a 2019 world championship bronze medallist, failed to progress beyond the round of 16 in the men’s 65kg sanda event.

At the last edition of the Asian Games, India’s 13-member wushu contingent returned with four bronze medals.
