The Indian women’s handball team's campaign at the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China ended in the group stage. The handball tournament was scheduled from September 25 to October 5.
The Indian women’s handball team was making its fifth appearance at the continental meet. Indian women made their Asian Games handball debut at Doha 2006. They finished eighth in 2006, 2010 and 2014, and were ranked ninth at Jakarta 2018.
The women’s handball event was played across two venues - Zhejiang Gongshang University Sports Centre and Zhejiang Normal University Xiaoshan Gymnasium.
Women’s handball was introduced into the Asian Games in 1990, eight years after men’s handball was inducted. The Republic of Korea asserted their dominance in the women’s category of this event, winning the gold seven times out of eight editions before Hangzhou 2023.

India were placed alongside hosts and 2010 gold medallists China, Hong Kong China, Japan and Nepal in Group B. Japan finished on the podium three times before 2023, picking up bronze medals in 1998, 2006 and 2018. Hong Kong China, meanwhile, were appearing for the fourth time at the continental meet while Nepal made their debut.
Korea were accompanied by two-time silver medalists Kazakhstan, Thailand and Uzbekistan in Group A.
The top two teams from each group at the end of the preliminary round made the semi-finals. The bronze and gold medal playoffs take place on the final day of the tournament.
