A total of 16 women’s football teams competed for medals at the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China from September 21 to October 6, across five venues.
Japan clinched the gold medal in Hangzhou by defeating the Democratic People's Republic of Korea 4-1 in the final. Meanwhile, hosts China defeated Uzbekistan 7-0 to win the bronze medal.
Unlike the men’s football event, which is an under-23 affair with a maximum of three players over the age limit allowed in each squad, women’s football at the Asian Games was contested by full-fledged senior teams.
The 16 football teams were divided into five groups - two with three teams each, two with four teams each and one with two teams.
Barring Group C, which featured only DPR Korea and Singapore after Cambodia’s withdrawal, teams from all other pools played each other once in the group or preliminary stage. DPR Korea and Singapore, meanwhile, faced each other twice in the group stages.
