Asian Games 2023: India’s volleyball results, scores and points table

The Indian men's and women’s volleyball teams were in action at Hangzhou 2023. The tournament was played from September 19 to October 7.

India men’s and women’s volleyball teams competed at the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China. The volleyball tournaments were played across four venues from September 19 to October 7.

The Indian men’s volleyball team began its campaign in Pool C of the preliminary round against Cambodia on September 19. Meanwhile, the women’s team toook on the People's Republic of Korea in its opening match in Pool A on September 30.

India finished sixth in the men's tournament, having lost to Pakistan 3-0 in the 5th place classification match. In the women's tournament, the Indian team finished ninth.

Volleyball for men was introduced at the Asian Games at Tokyo 1958. India finished third in that edition.

The women’s volleyball event was added in the following edition - Jakarta 1962 - but the Indian women’s volleyball team made its Asian Games debut at Delhi 1982.

The Indian men’s volleyball team has won three medals at the Asian Games so far - one silver (1962) and two bronze medals (1958 and 1986). The women’s team is yet to finish on the podium at the continental event.

In the 19-team men’s competition, India were grouped alongside three-time champions Republic of Korea and Cambodia in Pool C. The teams were divided into six groups, with each team facing the other in a single-headed round-robin format.

The top two teams from the six groups advanced to the next round, with qualifying teams contesting cross matches (B1 vs E2, A2 vs F1, A1 vs F2, B2 v E1, C1 vs D2, C2 v D1). The winners of these matches contested for rankings 1-6, while the losers competed for rankings 7-12.

India were been grouped with six-time champions and hosts China and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in Pool A of the women’s competition. The top two teams in each group qualified for the top eight. Teams finishing third and fourth from each group were relegated to the 9-13 classification rounds.
