The Indian boxing team, headlined by world champions Lovlina Borgohain and Nikhat Zareen, picked up five medals - one silver and four bronze - at the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, People’s Republic of China.
Boxing at Asian Games 2023 took place at the Hangzhou Gymnasium from September 24 to October 5. The bouts started from the preliminary rounds, followed by semi-finals and finals.
While boxing made its Asian Games debut at Manila 1954, women’s boxing was introduced at the 2010 edition held in Guangzhou, China. Boxing offered 13 gold medals - seven men’s and six women’s - across the Olympic weight divisions at the 19th Asian Games.
India had sent a 13-member boxing team to the Hangzhou Asian Games.
Lovlina Borgohain, a Tokyo 2020 Olympic bronze medallist, picked up a silver medal women’s 75kg category.
Meanwhile, Nikhat Zareen, also a Commonwealth Games champion, won the bronze medal on her Asian Games debut. Preeti Pawar (54kg) and Parveen Hooda (57kg) were the other medallists among women.
In the men's event, Narender Berwal was the only Indian boxer to finish on the podium. Berwal won the bronze medal in the men's +92kg division.
Boxing at the Asian Games 2023 was also a Paris 2024 Olympics qualifier event. In the men’s events, the gold and silver medallists in each of the seven weight divisions were issued a quota to Paris 2024. In the women’s categories, four quotas were available for all categories other than the 66kg and 75kg, for which there were two berths on offer like men’s. Only one boxer per country is eligible for the quotas in each weight category.
India secured four boxing quotas for the Paris 2024 Olympics in Hangzhou – Nikhat Zareen (50kg), Preeti Pawar (54kg), Parveen Hooda (57kg) and Lovlina Borgohain (75kg).
With nine gold, 17 silver and 36 bronze medals, India have so far won a total of 62 medals in boxing at the Asian Games.
