Athletes to watch in 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 100m events

The men's field looks to be a contest between Japan's Kiryu Yoshihide and Koike Yuki, China's Xie, Malaysia's Azeem Fahmi, and Thailand's Puripol Boonson.

Kiryu is the fastest Asian sprinter this year who is taking part in the Asiad, having clocked 10.03 in May, ranking him third in the continent in 2023 behind two fellow Japanese sprinters who are not in Hangzhou. His teammate Koike, seventh-fastest in Asia this year at 10.11, is also one to watch.

Xie has clocked 10.05 and Fahmi 10.11, while Boonson – the Asian under-20 record holder over the longer 200m – has a career-best 10.09, but has not run much this year due to injury.

In the women's 100m event, Singaporean Pereira enters as the favourite to do the sprint double.

Pereira leads all Asian women over the distance this year with an 11.20 seconds national record, a mark she has lowered six times in 2023 alone. The Asian champion also arrives in Hangzhou as the Southeast Asian Games gold medallist and the top performer from the continent at the recent World Athletics Championships in August.

Singapore has not had an Asian Games gold medallist in athletics since 1974, also the last year the country even featured on a medal rostrum in track and field at the Asian Games. That looks set to change this year.
