The Indian men’s and women’s teams made their 3x3 basketball debut at the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China.

3x3 basketball at the Asian Games 2023 was held at Deqing Geographic Information Park Basketball Court, scheduled between September 25 and October 1.

The Indian men's team's campaign ended in the round of 16, after losing to Iran, while the women's team campaign finished in the quarter-finals against Chinese Taipei.

Basketball has been ever-present in the continental meet since 1951. However, the 3x3 basketball made its debut only at Jakarta 2018.

The 3x3 basketball game is based on the original version, including ball handling regulations and basic violation rules. However, structural differences, a 12-second shot clock and a tweaked scoring system set it apart from traditional 5x5 basketball.

In Asian Games basketball history, the People’s Republic of China have bagged the most gold medals - eight in men’s and six in women’s. South Korea, meanwhile, have the most medals with 23.

The two nations were at the fore in 3x3 basketball’s Asian Games debut in Jakarta. China clinched the inaugural gold medal in both men’s and women’s competitions, while South Korea bagged silver in the men’s competition and Japan won silver in the women’s competition.

Building up to the Hangzhou Games, both Indian men’s and women’s 3x3 basketball teams finished 11th in the 2023 FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup. Historically, the Indian men’s 3x3 team is yet to win a medal in the FIBA Asia Cup. The women’s 3x3 team, however, was the 2013 champion.
