Tajinderpal Singh Toor, the Asian record holder in men’s shot put, and ace hurdler Jyothi Yarraji will spearhead the Indian challenge at the Asian Athletics Championships 2023 to be at the Suphachalasai National Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, from July 12 to 16.
The Asian Athletics Championships 2023 will be available on live stream in India.
The latest edition of the continental event is being held after a gap of four years. The 2021 meet, scheduled in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China, was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
India had initially announced a 54-member squad for the Asian Athletics Championships 2023. However, few of the Indian athletes, including triple jump national record holder Praveen Chithravel, long jumper Jeswin Aldrin and javelin thrower Rohit Yadav, pulled out later due to injuries.
Olympic champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra and 3000m steeplechase athlete Avinash Sable, both preparing for the World Athletics Championships in August, are also not part of the Indian squad.
Indian shot putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor, a 2018 Asian Games champion, will be in action at the continental meet. The 28-year-old recently bettered his own Asian and national records with an effort of 21.77m at the National Inter-State Championships last month.
Murali Sreeshankar, who achieved his personal best jump of 8.41m leap at the inter-states, will compete in the men’s long jump event. Shaili Singh and Ancy Sojan are competing for India in the women’s long jump.
Jyothi Yarraji, the national record holder in women’s 100m hurdles, will lead the Indian team in the track events at the Asian meet. The 23-year-old Jyothi Yarraji will enter the Bangkok event on the back of an impressive season, having won several medals in athletics competitions abroad as well as in India. Rezoana Mallick Heena, the reigning Asian U20 women’s 400m champion, is also part of the India squad.
The Indian team trained at the national camp organised in Patiala, Bengaluru and Thiruvananthapuram before departing for Bangkok.
Olympian Anju Bobby George, a World Championships bronze medallist in women's long jump, has been appointed as the team leader of the Indian contingent.
India finished with 15 medals - two gold, eight silver and five bronze - at the last Asian Athletics Championships, held in Doha in 2019.
