Artistic gymnastics: India’s Pranati Nayak fails to make the final at Tokyo 2020
The Indian gymnast was unable to make the top 24 in the qualification round.
India’s lone gymnast at the Tokyo Olympics, Pranati Nayak, fell short of making the cut for the medal rounds in any of the five artistic gymnastics events on Sunday.
Pranati Nayak accumulated a total of 42.565 points across four categories: floor exercise, vault, balance beam and uneven bars and was ranked 79 among the 80 gymnasts who completed the apparatus at the Ariake Gymnastics Centre.
While the top 24 participants from the qualification round make the cut for the all-around final, the top eight qualify for the medal round in each apparatus. Four-time Olympic gold medallist Simone Biles of the USA topped all-around qualifying with 57.731 points.
Artistic gymnastics at the Olympics has five medals up for grabs in the individual events. An athlete can win individual titles in all-around, floor exercise, vault, balance beam and uneven bars.
The qualification results mean that the 26-year-old Pranati Nayak, who qualified for the Olympics through a continental quota, also missed out on making the medal round in the individual apparatus as well.
In her qualification round, Pranati Nayak began her campaign with floor exercise. Her routine earned Pranati 10.633 points with a difficulty of 4.400 points and 6.233 for her execution. She finished 83rd out of 85 gymnasts in the discipline while Vanessa Ferrari of Italy topped it with 14.166 points ahead of Simone Biles.
Pranati Nayak then moved on to the vault where she scored 13.466 points. The Indian was awarded 5.000 on the difficulty scale while she got 8.466 points for her execution. Simone Biles led in the vault with 15.183 points.
Uneven bars were a lowly affair for Pranati Nayak as she could win just 9.033 points, which hampered her chances in the all-around standings. Nina Derwael of Belgium led the charts with 15.366 points.
The Indian pocketed another 9.433 points in the balance beam, but it was too little to push her into contention for a place in the final. Chenchen Guan of China was on top of the leaderboard with 14.933 points.
