Max Whitlock spends some of Christmas Day in hospital 

Double Olympic gold medallist Max Whitlock took on a bit too much on Christmas Day and ended up in hospital.

British gymnast Whitlock burned his left foot while trying to cook Christmas dinner and had to go to 'Accident and Emergency' (emergency room), but luckily for him and artistic gymnastics fans the injuries were merely superficial.

The 27-year-old posted a photo of his foot up in front of the Christmas tree with a dressing on the burnt area.

"So had to cook Christmas dinner this year at home. Which ended up with a little trip to A&E and a burnt left foot and no Christmas dinner!!" Whitlock posted on social media.

The five-time Olympic medallist was full of praise for the attention he received, thanking the National Health Service staff for their help.

"NHS staff, thanks for being amazing," he said.

Whitlock will defend his pommel horse and floor exercise titles at Tokyo 2020 next summer.

He admits he has found training harder over the years with his body taking longer to recover, but said in March - before the postponement of the Tokyo Games - that he would like to keep going until Paris 2024.

Despite COVID restrictions in the south of England, Whitlock has been able to continue training with a pommel horse in his back garden among his home apparatus.
