2024 Artistic Gymnastics European Championships: Athletes to watch
Great Britain, the history-making team champions last time out will be without Jessica Gadirova, the all-around European champion from 2023, and clubmate Ondine Achampong – who had a cracking British Championships winning the all-around in March – with injury keeping them both out of the team this time around.
Alice Kinsella, Becky Downie and Georgia-Mae Fenton return to defend their title, this time joined by Ruby Evans and Abi Martin.
Italy will be a strong force with the return of three of the side who won silver in 2023, and gold in 2022 with Alice D'Amato, twin sister Asia D'Amato and Angela Andreoli (a late replacement for Giorgia Villa who withdrew due to illness). Manila Esposito, part of the 2023 side returns, and Elisa Iorio, who helped the team to a bronze medal at the 2019 World Championships in Stuttgart, complete the side.
The twins will both be eyeing the all-around podium with Asia the 2022 gold medallist, and Alice bronze medallist last time out. Alice is also defending champion on bars, and Asia silver medallist on vault in 2023.
France, who are less than three months out from hosting a home Olympic Games will be looking to continue their momentum in the team competition having claimed bronze at the 2023 World Championships in Antwerp, a first world team medal since 1950. They will be without talismanic Melanie de Jesus dos Santos, however, who is focusing on training for her home Games at her US base.
Morgane Osyssek-Reimer, Coline Devillard, Lorette Charpy, Marine Boyer and Ming Van Eijken make up the squad. Devillard will be looking to retain her vault title, while Boyer, a two-time Olympian with fourth place on beam at Rio 2016 her best result, could challenge in apparatus finals having already secured silver and bronze at the European Championships in 2016 and 2018, respectively. Van Eijken, the 2022 junior European silver medallist on vault makes her senior international debut.
In the individual events, the likes of Tokyo 2020 bars gold medallist Nina Derwael will be favoured for gold on her favourite apparatus. The Belgian qualified for Paris 2024 via the four-series FIG Apparatus World Cup, which finished in April.
Romania will be showcasing their current form as the once-dominant force make their way back to the fore with a team that has qualified for Paris 2024 after missing the past two Olympiads. Led by Sabrina Maneca-Voinea, 16, a fourth-place finisher in the world floor final of 2023, and Ana Barbosu, a six-time junior European medallist, the Romanians will hope to shine in the continental championships once again.
