Artistic gymnastics at Tokyo 2020 Olympics: Pranati Nayak in fray - watch live
If she qualifies for the main events, the 26-year-old from Bengal will be competing for five medals at Tokyo 2020. Watch Pranati Nayak in live action.
Pranati Nayak is the only gymnast to represent India at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. She will be competing in artistic gymnastics which includes vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise. The event has 50 entries in all.
Gymnastics will start from July 24 to August 8 and the Ariake Gymnastics Centre will host all the events.
Pranati will begin her quest on Day 2 on Sunday with the qualification rounds. The final for vault and uneven bars will take place on August 1 while the medal rounds for floor exercise and balance beam will be on August 2 and August 3, respectively.
Top 24 gymnasts, based on the final score from all four events in the qualification round, will compete in the individual all-around event, the finals for which will be held on July 29.
The 26-year-old from West Bengal is a bronze medallist in vault at the 2019 Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championship held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Pranati qualified for the Summer Games through a continental quota spot after the 2021 Asian Championships was called off due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dipa Karmakar, who was the first Indian female gymnast to compete in the Olympics, pulled out of the World Championship owing to an injury and a cancelled Asian Championship ruined her chances for Tokyo. Dipa had finished a creditable fourth in women’s vault gymnastics at Rio 2016.
Pranati Nayak will be up against some of the best gymnasts in Tokyo. USA’s champion Simone Biles will be hoping to replicate her 2016 Olympics performance to win her second all-around title in Tokyo.
Other athletes to look out for will be two-time world silver medallist Jade Ashtyn Corey and 2019 Junior world champion Elena Gerasimova.
Jade, representing the USA, is known for her power-packed performance on vault and floor exercise while ROC’s 17-year-old Elena is a top balance beam contestant.
