The Indian men’s recurve team of Atanu Das, Dhiraj Bommadevara and Tarundeep Rai finished with a silver medal at the Archery World Cup 2023 Stage 1 in Antalya, Turkey, on Sunday.
The Indian trio lost to Li Zhongyuan, Qi Xiangshuo and Wei Shaoxuan of China 4-5 in the final. India lost the first two sets but rallied to win the next two to level the scores at 4-4. Both teams were tied at 28-28 in the deciding fifth set, forcing a shoot-off, which the Chinese team won as the opening shot from Li landed closest to the centre.
En route to the final, the fourth-seeded Indian men’s recurve archery team had defeated Italy, Japan, Chinese Taipei and the Netherlands.
Later on the day, Dhiraj Bommadevara clinched the bronze in the men’s individual recurve event after beating Ilfat Abdullin of Kazakhstan 7-3 in his medal match.
Starting with the semi-finals on Sunday, Dhiraj Bommadevara lost to Dan Olaru of Moldova by a 6-4 margin to make the bronze medal match. Dhiraj was leading 4-0 at one point but squandered his lead.
En route to the semis, Dhiraj Bommadevara defeated Brady Ellison of the USA, a former world champion and Olympic medallist, and his senior compatriot Tarundeep Rai.
With the two medals on Sunday, India finished the Turkey meet with four medals - two gold, one silver and one bronze.
Jyothi Surekha Vennam had a hand in both gold medals India won on Saturday. She topped the podium in the women’s individual compound event and partnered Ojas Pravin Deotale to win the compound team event.
