Archery at Paris 2024 Olympics: Preview, full schedule, and how to watch live
Draw, steady, loose! 128 of the world’s best archers will gather at the Esplanade des Invalides as archery takes centre stage at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 from 25 July to 4 August.
The competition will commence on 25 July with the ranking rounds for all five events, before enduring a two-day hiatus to give athletes a chance to attend the Opening Ceremony and fine-tune their shooting ahead of the matchplay rounds scheduled for 28 July through 4 August.
The tense nature of the matchplay format will have even the most seasoned veterans quivering as they attempt to hit the bullseye and advance to the next round. With an atmosphere as daunting as the prospect of elimination, archery will be a must-see event at Paris 2024.
Below, we take a closer look at the stars to watch out for in Paris, the competition schedule, and how to watch the action.
Archery stars to watch at Paris 2024 Olympics
Turkish Olympic champion Mete Gazoz certainly knows how to handle a bow. The 25-year-old has already established himself as a major medal contender, winning three world cups, one individual world championship and an Olympic title.
His trademark celebration has become a mainstay of archery competitions, with his infectious grin concealing a competitive drive that fuels an archery machine. Nonetheless, Gazoz is more man than machine, and his competitors will hope to prove that at Paris 2024.
World number one Marcus D’Almeida will be among those looking to challenge Gazoz. He’ll call on past experience, including a silver medal at the Youth Olympic Games Nanjing 2014 and bronze medal at the 2023 world championships, to inform his shooting in Paris.
Three-time Olympic medalist Mauro Nespoli will also lean on past tribulations while trying to claim the individual Olympic title that has eluded him for 16 years.
Kim Woojin will lead a stacked Republic of Korea team. The three-time world champion will aim for his first individual Olympic title at Paris 2024.
With results anything but guaranteed in archery, the individual and team competitions promise to be a captivating affair. This extends to the women’s individual and team events as well.
World number one Casey Kaufhold will lead a strong American team, as she attempts to become the first female individual gold medallist from the United States of America since Luann Ryon at the Olympic Games Montreal 1976.
Czech world champion Marie Horáčková will be among those looking to challenge Kaufhold. She has yet to find the form this season that led her to a world championship last year, but will no doubt use that experience to settle her nerves in Paris.
World championships runner-up Alejandra Valencia of Mexico is set to compete at her fourth Olympic Games. She’ll hope to add some truth to the idiom, “the fourth time's a charm,” as she pursues her first gold medal.
Nonetheless, the Republic of Korea will seek to spoil any fairy tale endings for Kaufhold, Horáčková or Valencia by claiming the individual gold medal for a tenth time and defending their team title from Tokyo 2020. Lim Sihyeon will lead a young team featuring Jeon Hunyoung and Nam Suhyeon.
