Nanjing 2014
About the Games
Nanjing 2014 was the second-ever Summer Youth Olympic Games. The host city was awarded the bid in February 2010, which made it the second city after Beijing to host an Olympic event in China. Nanjing 2014 pledged to “Share the Games, Share Our Dreams” for youth of different races, ethnicities and cultural backgrounds.
The Nanjing 2014 programme saw innovations, including the introduction of golf at the Youth Olympic Games—which marked its return to the Olympic programme for the first time since the Games of the II Olympiad. The sport of rugby, featuring six teams each for male and female events, also made its first appearance at the YOG as well as on the Olympic programme in its current Rugby Sevens format for the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Mixed team competitions became a highlight of Nanjing 2014. In total, these competitions were programmed for 15 sports and 18 events. Among which was the 8x100m mixed international team relay, which featured 680 athletes. The teams were composed regardless of athletes’ nationalities, languages, ethnicities and genders. In total 3,798 young athletes from 205 countries and regions participated.
