Rising Italian Alpine skier Matilde Lorenzi, 19, suffers fatal training crash

The promising skier's death after an accident on Val Senales has left Italian skiing in mourning.

Young Italian Alpine skier Matilde Lorenzi has died of her injuries aged 19 after a serious training crash, according to the Italian Ministry of Defence.

The 19-year-old, who was part of the Italian Army's sports section, succumbed to her injuries on the morning of Tuesday 29 October.

Lorenzi, who was part of the junior women's team and came from Villarbasse, had competed on the FIS Europa Cup circuit. She was training on the Gravald G1 piste on Val Senales in the region of South Tyrol when she fell.

She was attended to immediately and taken by helicopter to hospital in Bolzano, where she lost her fight for life.

Lorenzi was the younger sister of fellow skier Lucrezia, who has raced on the World Cup series in slalom. The youngester was raised on the slopes of Sestrière, competed in last year's Junior World Alpine Ski Championships, where she finished sixth in downhill and eighth in super-G.

The 19-year-old was also Italian junior champion last season in the overall standings and super-G. Her best result on the FIS Europa Cup circuit was an 11th place finish in a super-G in St Moritz in December 2023.

Both the Italian Winter Sports Federation and the International Ski and Snowboard Federation have expressed condolences over her death.
