Alpine skiing: Marco Odermatt secures third consecutive Giant slalom crystal globe with eighth win this season, capturing Aspen
The Swiss star, the reigning Olympic champ, hasn't lost a GS race in over a year, and held off teammate Loic Meillard for the win in the Rockies. Atle Lie McGrath finished third.
Marco Odermatt continued a dominant display on the downhill slopes Friday (1 March) in Aspen, Colorado.
The Swiss superstar secured his eighth FIS World Cup win in eight starts this season, capturing the men's Giant slalom in the U.S., helping him to claim a third consecutive GS Crystal Globe.
Last week Odermatt claimed the overall World Cup win with victory in nearby Lake Tahoe, California.
Odermatt, the reigning Olympic champion in the GS, held off Swiss teammate Loic Meillard with a 2:07.87 to win by 0.14 seconds, though Meillard was faster in the second of their two runs on Friday.
Atle Lie McGrath of Norway finished third with 2:08.68.
Dating back to last season, Odermatt has now won 11 consecutive World Cup GS races, matching a mark set by Austria's Annemarie Moser-Proell in 1972-74, according to FIS.
"It was probably the hardest day of the season," Odermatt said, according to FIS. “It was so tough, I don’t know why, probably the altitude and the warm temperature...
He continued: "It takes so much energy to always get into this race mood, into this focus. It’s really not easy... Each run is so much work for the mental part. Happy that I still had enough energy to win.”
Overall, it's a 36th career World Cup win for Odermatt, tying him for seventh on the men's all-time list.
