Norwegian newcomer Fredrik Moeller delivered another surprise victory on the Stelvio by taking the Bormio Super G on Sunday (29 December).

The 24-year-old, starting in the top group of 15 athletes for the first time in his 26-race FIS Alpine Ski World Cup career, was the fourth man down the slope. And his time of 1:29.22 would not be beaten at the Italian resort which will be used for the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026.

After fourth-place finishes in the last two Super G rounds in Beaver Creek and Val Gardena, this was Moeller's first appearance on a World Cup podium.

He was two-tenths quicker than Austria’s Vincent Kriechmayr with Alexis Monney of Switzerland in third after clinching his maiden World Cup victory in Saturday's downhill.

For the second day running, pre-race favourite Marco Odermatt had to settle for fifth place with teammate Stefan Rogentin ahead in fourth.

Moeller told Eurosport, “I hoped today was going to feel a bit smoother down there but it did not! I always just try to ski the way I know I can and it paid off today.

“I had two good Super G races before this. I knew my speed was good and the skis felt good. I had a pretty good feeling today but, to come out with a win, I didn’t expect that.”

The first man to start, Gino Caviezel, was airlifted to hospital after crashing through a gate at the top of the San Pietro jump. The 32-year-old Swiss was conscious while he received treatment to what looked a serious leg injury. It was another nasty incident on the Stelvio after French speed specialist Cyprien Sarrazin suffered a brain bleed in Friday training.

Odermatt stays on top of the Super G season standings but Moeller is now just five points behind in second. The Swiss star has extended his overall World Cup lead to 161 points.

Henrik Kristoffersen will hope to close that gap in the Madonna di Campiglio slalom on 8 January, before Odermatt returns to action in the St Anton downhill three days later.
