The morning after his big crash near the end of the Wengen downhill, Aleksander Aamodt Kilde posted a photo of himself and partner Mikaela Shiffrin at his bedside in hospital on social media on Sunday (14 January).

The Norwegian speed ace fell on the final turn of Saturday's Lauberhorn test and was flung airborne into the safety netting just before the finish line.

Kilde was airlifted to Interlaken Hospital before being transferred to Bern for surgery.

Shiffrin, who sat out this weekend's women's FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup races in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee due to a cold, was quick to pay a visit.

In a statement put out by FIS, Norwegian team doctor Marc Jacob Strauss said, "Aleksander has had his shoulder dislocated, and a cut in his calf. He has no fractures, but is bruised."

On Friday, French star Alexis Pinturault was ruled out for the rest of the season after rupturing an anterior cruciate knee ligament.

Accompanying his photo post, Kilde said, "I'm here (and being taken care of by the one and only Mikaela Shiffrin)... This sport can be brutal, but I still love it."
