The Indian men’s football team was clubbed with China and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2024 qualifiers in Dalian, the People’s Republic of China.
Placed in Group G, India began their campaign with a 2-1 loss against China at the Dalian Suoyuwan Football Stadium on Saturday and then went down 3-0 to the UAE at the Dalian Sports Centre Stadium on Tuesday.
India under-23 were scheduled to play their opening match against Maldives on September 6 but it was cancelled after the Maldivian football team withdrew from the tournament.
The AFC U23 Asian Cup 2024 qualifiers featured a total of 43 teams, divided into 11 groups. The top team from each group joined hosts Qatar at the 16-team main event scheduled from April 15 to May 3 next year.
Among the nations finishing second in their respective groups, the four best-performing teams from the 11 groups also made it to Qatar 2024.
India finished third and last in their group at the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2024 qualifiers and failed to progress.

The AFC U23 Asian Cup 2024 next year will act as a qualifying event for the Paris 2024 Olympics. The top three teams from the main event will earn a direct entry into the next year’s Summer Games.
The AFC U23 Asian Cup is a biennial international football tournament. It was first played in 2013 as the AFC U22 Championship but was later rechristened to AFC U23 Championship. Since the 2022 edition, it has been named the AFC U23 Asian Cup.
The five editions of the tournament have seen five different winners. Saudi Arabia won the 2022 AFC U23 Asian Cup, defeating host nation Uzbekistan 2-0 in the final.
India have never featured in the AFC U23 Asian Cup main event.
