Adam Peaty continued his red hot form with victory in the men's 50m breaststroke on the penultimate day of swimming action at the European Aquatics Championships.

The British world record-holder blasted out of the blocks to touch home in 26.21, which is the seventh fastest time in history. Belarusian Ilya Shymanovich finished +0.34 back second, with Nicolo Martinenghi of Italy in third.

Peaty's victory means he has won both the 50m and 100m breaststroke titles, as well as the 4x100 medley at four-consecutive European Championships since 2014. He could make it a quadruple quadruple if Team GB win tomorrow's mixed medley relay competition.

The other big story of the night came in the women's 50m breaststroke semi-final, where Benedetta Pilato set a new world record.

The Italian swam a 29.30, shaving a significant 0.20 seconds off Lilly King's 2017 record of 29.50.

Mykhaylo Romanchuk caused an upset to win the men's 800m freestyle event.

The Ukrainian recorded a time of 7.42.61, almost a second quicker than reigning world champion Gregorio Paltrinieri in second. Gabriele Detti of Italy completed the podium in third.

Dutch swimmer Femke Heemskerk emerged victorious from a star-studded women's 100m freestyle final.

She touched home in 53.05, ahead of Frenchwoman Marie Wattel in second, and Great Britain's Anna Hopkin in third. London 2012 Olympic champion Ranomi Kromowidjojo took fourth place, while highly-rated Brit Freya Anderson came home in fifth.

A photo finish in the men's 200m backstroke saw Russia's Evgeny Rylov out-touch Britain's Luke Greenbank to take the gold medal in a time of 1.54.46. Roman Mityukov of Switzerland finished in third.

There was a huge upset in the women's 200m individual medley final, where Israel's Anastasia Gorbenko won a thrilling race in 2.09.99.

Britain's Abbie Wood sealed second place just 0.3s back, while reigning world and Olympic champion Katinka Hosszu could only manage third place in her home pool.

The final event of the evening saw British team Duncan Scott, Dean Thomas, Anna Hopkin and Freya Anderson win the 4x100m mixed freestyle relay event, which will be making its debut in the Olympic programme at Tokyo 2020.

The quartet clocked home 3.22.07, ahead of second-placed Netherlands and Italy in third.
