Thirty preliminary rounds were played in a busy first day of 3x3 basketball at the Wutaishan Sports Centre on 18 August.

In the men's events, Slovenia ended the day on top of Pool A with two wins and an average of 18 points per game. Second, also with two wins, but on a lower points average of 15.5, were Lithuania. Five other teams finished the day with victories out of two: New Zealand, Russia, Spain, Argentina, and Germany.

Russia cinched the lead in Pool B with two wins and an average of 20.5 points, but both New Zealand and Argentina were also unbeaten, averaging 17 and 16 points respectively.

In the women's competition, Belgium enjoyed a comfortable 22-7 win over Guam while Spain crushed the Syrian Arab Republic 21-3.

Dilana Dilixiati (CHN) helped the Chinese women's team to a 13-7 win against the Netherlands while the USA women's team, led by De’Janae Boykin and Katie Lou Samuelson, who both won gold at the 2014 FIBA U-17 World Championships, easily beat Romania 21-3.

Two pools of 10 teams played in the women's rounds on Monday, with Spain coming out on top of its pool with an average of 21 points per game and Belgium heading its pool with an average of 22 points.
