Excitement is brewing ahead of the first-ever Women’s America’s Cup sailing competition, which begins on Saturday (5 October) in Barcelona.

The regatta will run until 13 October, bringing together some of the biggest names in the sport for the inaugural staging of the women’s event.

Split into twelve teams – America’s Cup teams and invited teams – a qualification series gets proceedings underway, which will see participants compete in a series of fleet races.

The top three teams from each group will progress to the semi-final series before a final match race to determine the overall champion.

Two-time Olympic gold medallist Hannah Mills is among those headlining the sides, saying: “This is such an opportunity for women to get experience in these boats.

“We’ve all raced Olympic boats but in this foiling era of sailing there is very little opportunity and experience with women sailors and this, really for me, marks a huge step forward.”

There will be 17 Olympic medallists in total, boasting seven gold medals, 11 silver, and four bronze.
