Sweden’s Armand 'Mondo' Duplantis was golden again, winning the city pole vault competition to open the Lausanne Diamond League 2024 meeting.

The freshly crowned Olympic Games Paris 2024 gold medallist's triumph on Wednesday evening (21 August) took place in the Place de la Navigation park in the Swiss city, 24 hours before many other stars of track and field athletics are set to compete in Lausanne's Olympic stadium.

The 24-year-old two-time Olympic champion used just four jumps to top the final standings, needing only one attempt at 5.62m, 5.82m, 5.92m, and 6.0m. With the win secured, he raised the bar to 6.15m and cleared it on his third try to set a new meeting record.

"It's always nerve-wracking when you have a big performance like I did at the Olympics. I stepped out on the track today and I really loved it," he said afterward.

American Sam Kendricks, who took silver in Paris, was runner-up to Duplantis again after clearing 5.92m in his first attempt. He had three unsuccessful 6.0m tries.

There was a three-way tie for third place with Norway’s Sondre Guttormsen, Australia’s Kurtis Marschall and the Philippines’ E.J. Obiena all clearing 5.82m in one go.

Paris 2024 bronze medallist Emmanouil Karalis of Greece also cleared the height but needed two tries. He finished sixth in the standings.

In Paris, Duplantis set the world record for a ninth time, this time at 6.25m. His victory in Lausanne continues a win streak dating back some 13 months.

The rest of events at the 49th edition of the Athletissima meet, the 11th Diamond League leg of the 2024 season, are scheduled Thursday (22 August). The events take place at the La Pontaise Olympic stadium, with a regular capacity of 15,700. Action in the stadium begins at 7:45pm on Thursday with the women’s shot put.
