American ace Lilia Vu played a stunning final round of golf to clinch the Women's British Open at the Walton Heath Golf Club in Surrey, England on Sunday (13 August) by six strokes.

The 25-year-old Vu consolidated her lead at the start of the round shooting six birdies to card five-under-par 67 to finish 14-under.

Vu and home favourite Charley Hull were embroiled in an arm wrestle going into the final round with a share of the lead with a slim one-stroke lead over Angel Yin.

But the day belonged to the American who took control of the round to claim her second major of the year, adding to her Chevron Championship title from April.  Vu also won the Honda LPGA Thailand earlier this year.

The American was the early pacesetter on Sunday, moving a shot clear of Hull courtesy of a birdie on the second. She built on the moment with birdies on the ninth and 10th to extend her lead to five shots.

Hull roared back into contention with an eagle on the 11th, cutting Vu’s advantage to three strokes, raising the prospect of a fightback. Vu responded to Hull’s eagle with a superb birdie on the 12th to lead by four.

On the 15th Hull gave herself a shot at another eagle with a sensational approach shot to potentially get within two of Vu. Her putt veered to the right and she had to settle for a birdie. Vu landed her sixth birdie to maintain the status quo.

Vu finished the round in style, draining a birdie putt to capture the title, becoming the first American since Juli Inkster in 1999 to win multiple majors in the same season.

Ally Ewing, suffered a spectacular third-round collapse, relinquishing a five-shot advantage to finish the week tied sixth.

“Given how I felt after the Chevron Championship and honestly thinking those two wins were a fluke and just to be here today I can’t thank my team and my family enough for believing in me,” Vu said.

“It was just hard for the last couple of months and then somehow they believed in me and helped me get this win here.”
