UCI Mountain Bike World Cup Mont-Sainte-Anne: Riders to watch
Cross-Country
Swiss cross-country legend Nino Schurter is coming into the final stop with an 89-point lead over Jordan Sarrou, who follows in second place.
The Frenchman got the better of Schurter at last weekend’s event in Snowshoe, beating him in the final sprint. The Swiss ten-time world champion, who tops the rankings with 1433 points) will be eager to get back to winning ways and claim his ninth overall World Cup title.
Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medallist Mathias Fluckiger (1266 points) and Germany’s Luca Schwarzbauer (1213) both have a slim chance to take the overall win. However, it is more likely that we will see a duel between Schurter and Sarrou for the overall.
In the women’s category, 21-year-old Dutch multi-talent Puck Pieterse has already claimed the overall victory. Laura Stigger of Austria took her first XCO World Cup win in Snowshoe and moved up to fifth place in the overall. Her compatriot Mona Mitterwallner sits in second on 1352 points, with World Championships runner-up Loana Lecomte in third on 1211.
Pieterse also leads the short track World Cup, but just by 30 points to Alessandra Keller of Switzerland. Schwarzbauer holds a comfortable lead in the men’s category, having 230 points more than Sarrou.
Downhill
Austrian Valentina Höll secured the overall title for the second time in three years finishing third in Snowshoe.
The other two steps on the podium are still to be decided between Nina Hoffman of Germany and Camille Balance from France, with just 27 points separating the two before the final event.
Loïc Bruni of France leads in the men’s World Cup on 1518 points ahead of compatriot Loris Vergier on 1458.
The Canadians Jackson Goldstone and Finn Iles sit third and fourth and will be hoping to put in a good performance on home soil.
