Title holders China resoundingly defeated Singapore to lead the four countries through to the next round of the 2023 BWF Sudirman Cup on Tuesday (16 May).

The Chinese mixed badminton team, yet to drop a tie, continued their commanding start after He Bingjiao's 22-20, 21-15 women's singles victory over Yeo Jia Min sealed the Group A rubber.

The 12-time tournament champions then underlined their form with further wins in the men's and women's double to remain undefeated in the tournament so far.

Joining the Chinese into the quarter-finals is Indonesia who booked its place with a 4-1 win over Germany in Group B.

Jonatan Christie's 21-18, 21-17 victory over Fabian Roth in the men's singles handed the Singaporeans a 2-0 advantage heading into the women's singles where former world junior champion Gregoria Mariska Tunjung made light work defeating Yvonne Li to guarantee Singapore the tie.

There was some respite for the Germans who battled back from a set down to win the men's doubles (18-21, 21-17, 21-19) but it did little to change the overall outcome.

Also from Group B and through to the next stage are Thailand who defeated Canada 4-1.

There looked to be a glimmer of hope for the Canadians after Brian Yang bested Kantaphon Wangcharoen in the men's singles to level the tie after Thais had taken the opening mixed doubles.

When Michelle Li surged to a 12-6 lead in the women's singles in the third game an upset looked to be on the cards before her opponent, Ratchanok Intanon, rallied back to take the final game 22-20 and win.

2-1 up, the momentum then shifted entirely Thailand's way leaving Canada mulling over what might have been.

Joining the hosts in the quarters from Group A will be Denmark who produced a 5-0 whitewash over Egypt despite resting World No 1 Viktor Axelsen. The imperious Danes didn't drop a game across the five ties.
