Biography

Zoltan VARGA

Zoltán Varga was a Hungarian footballer who played in the 1960s thru the 1970s. He was best known for his time with Ferencvárosi TC from 1961-68, during which time he appeared in 153 matches, scoring 53 goals. He played for Ferencvárosi in 1965 when they won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, defeating Juventus 1-0 in the final. Varga was on the Hungarian national team from 1964-68, earning 12 caps and playing in the 1964 Olympics and on the side that was third at the 1964 European Championships. After leaving Ferencvárosi, he moved around a bit, playing first in Liège, Belgium and then joining Hertha BSC in Germany. While in Germany, he was involved in a bribery scandal and left the Bundesliga to play for Aberdeen in Scotland. He played his last few years with Ajax Amsterdam, Borussia Dortmund, FC Augsburg, and finally with KAA Gent. Varga later became a football manager, starting with Preußen Münster in 1981. He then was out of the game for a few years but returned to manage Ferencvárosi from 1996-97, and then spending time as a manager with Budapest Honvéd FC, Diósgyőri VTK, and finally with Győri ETO FC in 2001 and 2003. Varga died after he collapsed while playing in a senior game in Budapest.
