Winfried Ringwald was a member of the West German eights at the 1972 München Olympics that finished a disappointing fifth. In the coxed pairs four years later, he missed the A-final, and finished eighth. From 1971-73 he won West German coxless pairs title partnered by Alois Bierl. The pair also won a bronze medal at the 1973 European Championships. In 1977, Ringwald moved back to the eights and won a silver medal at the World Championships. He also collected a bronze medal, the following year.
Ringwald later became president of his home club, Ludwigshafener RV 1878, and in 2012 was elected president of the Sports Association of Ludwigshafen. He was also engaged as a local politician in Ludwigshafen. By profession, he was an actuary with an insurance company.
