William Saward qualified for the 1900 Olympic marathon by finishing second to Frederick Randall in the inaugural 1899 London-Brighton amateur race, although it was twice the Olympic distance. Saward dropped out of the Olympic marathon before the 4-mile mark. Saward was a member of the Essex Beagles and along with fellow ‘Beagle’ Thomas Bartlett, the two men were known as “The Twins” and were both members of the Essex club when they won the Southern Counties Cross Country title at Wembley Park in 1894. Shortly after his Olympic appearance, Saward turned professional.
