Biography

Hailing from Cuba, volleyball superstar Wilfredo León has become a talisman in his adopted country of Poland and hopes to end the country's 48-year medal drought at the Games.

Regarded as one of the best volleyball players of his era, León is known for his remarkable serve speed, jumping power, and spikes. In May 2021, he recorded the fastest serve ever in a VNL (Volleyball Nations League) tournament by clocking in at 135.6 kilometres per hour.

León's volleyball journey started in Santiago de Cuba, where his parents enrolled him in a recreational programme to keep him off the streets. He was just 11 years old when he started participating in international tournaments as a key player for the junior national team.

At 14, he rose to the Cuban national senior team and became the team's youngest captain at just 17. He played alongside Yoandi Leal and Robertlandy Simon in the 'Generation of Miracles,' leading his team to a silver medal victory at the 2010 World Championships.
