Werner SCHILDHAUER

Werner Schildhauer started his athletics career as a race walker before turning to distance running. In 1980, at Moskva, he placed seventh at 10,000 metres. Three years later he had his greatest moments, winning two silvers in the 5 and 10K at the World Championships, which he repeated at the 1982 Europeans. He competed in the World Cup in 1979, 1981 (gold-10K), and 1985; and the European Cup in 1979, 1981 (gold-10K), 1983 (gold-10K), 1985 (silver-10K), and 1987. Domestically Schildhauer won 11 East German Championships over different distances.

Schildhauer was known for his effective finishing kick. In 1983 he set a new German record in Halle for the 1-hour run with 20,536 metres, which still stands as of 2015. Schildhauer was educated as an electronic worker and was later employed by an energy service company.
