Walter Menzies CAMPBELL

Born in Glasgow, Menzies "Ming" Campbell attended Glasgow University, and then earned a law degree from Stanford. He was Called to the Scottish Bar in 1968, and became a Queen's Counsel in 1982. In his athletic career, he competed for Scotland at the 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in 100 yards (eliminated in the quarter-finals) and 220 yards (eliminated in the semi-finals) and for Britain the 1964 Olympics. He later began a long political career, and was elected to Parliament in 1987 from North East Fife, as a member of the Liberal Democratic Party. In 2006, he was chosen as the leader of the Liberal Dems, stepping down in October 2007. Campbell was appointed a CBE in 1987, and honored with a knighthood in 2004. In 2006, he was appointed as Chancellor of St. Andrews University, from which he was awarded an honoraray Doctor of Law. He stepped down as leader of the LIb Dems in 2007 but continued as an MP until 2015. Upon the dissolution of parliament before the 2015 General Election he was raised to the peerage and entered the House of Lords as Baron Campbell of Pittenweem.
