Biography

For Tim Shaw, it was unfortunate that the Olympics were not held in 1974 or 1975. He was unbeatable in those years, becoming in 1974 only the second man to hold world records in the 200 m, 400 m, and 1,500 m freestyle events. He accomplished this feat when only 16 years old, and in the space of four days. In 1975, he set five more individual world records, won five gold medals at the World Championships, and received the Sullivan Award, emblematic of the top amateur athlete in the United States. In 1983 he was a member of the gold medal winning water polo team at the Pan American Games and one year later he won a silver medal in water polo at the Olympics.
