Biography

Thomas Dumbill’s first ‘success’ was when he won the 1909 Lancashire Walking Club 10-mile handicap race around Manchester only to be disqualified. He was a member of the Rusholme club at the time but when he was selected to make his AAA Championship début in 1911 he had joined the Lancashire Walking Club. The following year he was placed third in the two-mile walk at the AAA Championships at Stamford Bridge. He was placed second in that year’s Northern Counties two-mile walk at New Brighton. He joined the famous Salford Harriers in 1913 and had another podium finish, third, in the Northern Counties 20 miles Championship at Bradford and he ended the season by winning the Lancashire two-mile championship at the Leigh Athletic Grounds, having re-joined the Lancashire Walking Club. Dumbill emigrated to Canada and during World War I served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force as a member of the Territorials.
